A Wide Array of Brands Produce Models that Delight Their Owners

A baker’s dozen of nameplates produce models that earn the highest scores in their segments in each of the award categories in our 2012 U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study.

Chevrolet receives three of the 22 segment awards—the most of any nameplate in the 2012 APEAL Study—and also the most APEAL awards for the General Motors flagship brand since 1997. Chevrolet models that receive segment awards include two small models and one large pickup: the Avalanche, Sonic and Volt.

Seven more nameplates included in the study each receive two segment awards for models with the highest index scores in their categories. In alphabetical order, the nameplates with top-ranked models in two segments are: Audi, Dodge, Ford, Kia, Mini, Nissan, and Porsche. New Duty will Likely Not Impact Chinese Consumers Who Want Luxury Imports

I appreciated recent comments from one of our readers, Tim S. from Wisconsin, about a post “New China Duty Only Impacts Makers of Vehicles with Larger Engines” on the minimal impact of a new duty that has been imposed by the Chinese government on cars imported from the U.S.

I want to address some of the reader’s questions and concerns.

First, what percentage of vehicles with larger engines are produced in China by General Motors and Ford? Between GM and Ford, approximately 99% of the vehicles they produced in China in 2011 were fitted with sub-2.5-liter engines.

As for GM and Ford vehicles that are exported to China from the U.S., I would guess (the data is not readily available) that nearly the opposite is true, and that nearly all are fitted with engines greater than 2.5 liters. But let’s put things into perspective: In 2011, GM and Ford built and sold nearly 1.6 million vehicles in China, but their combined exports to China from the U.S. were only some 35,000 vehicles (or a ratio of 50-to-1 of locally built vs. imported vehicles.) Brawn, Utility and Performance Attract Male Buyers in US Market

Premium sporty cars and large pickups remained the most popular models with male buyers during the first 11 months of 2011, based on real-time transaction data from J.D. Power’s Power Information Network® (PIN).

Six of the 10 new-vehicle models with the highest percentages of male buyers or lessees this year are light trucks—large pickups or vans. The two best-selling models in the US market through the first 11 months of 2011—the Ford F-Series and Chevrolet Silverado—are among the models with the highest percentages of male buyers. Both the F-Series and Silverado have posted higher sales this year vs. 2010, and the category’s sales have also outpaced the industry this year—year-to-date, large pickup sales are up slightly more than the industry’s 10% gain.
